It is a town located in south-west of Sardinia with Medio Campidano plain to the northeast, the hills and the Monte Linas massif to the southwest. The inhabited area is situated just on the first slopes of this mountain.
There are relevant evidence of the nuragic period, Nuraghes and Tombe dei Giganti (“Giants' Graves”), one of which, that of S. Cosimo, is among the largest in Sardinia.
The contacts with the Phoenicians are probable but not documented, while those with the Romans are certain: the territory of Gonnosfanadiga is rich in evidence ranging from the numerous finds of coins, furnishings and weapons, to the identification of remains of fortifications, camps, tombs and as many as four cemeteries.
In the second world war Gonnosfanadiga suffered a devastating bombing by American planes with hundreds of civilians killed, injured and disabled
Today it is a peaceful town characterized mainly by flourishing agricultural-pastoral and artisan activities.
A singular feature of this town is the frequency of centuries-old wells, placed along the roads and in crossroads, which still retain the dual function of offering a water resource to travellers and an opportunity for social meeting to the inhabitants of the place.
Typical craft products are local knives; the food products include wine, vegetables, honey, and sausages, while important festivals are dedicated to bread, olives and oil.
