The Sternschanzenpark is a popular local recreation park in the narrowly built Sternschanzenviertel. There are playgrounds, sports fields and boules alleys in it.
Until 1866, the area was an upstream part of the Hamburg city fortifications, to which the name also goes, since the 17th century defensive structures were designed in a star shape. The construction of the railway line between Hamburg and Altona separated it from the ramparts.
In the ski jump park is the water tower, which was built for the Hamburg waterworks in 1907 and was in operation until 1961. After that it was empty for a long time, from 2005-2007 it was converted into a hotel (Mövenpick) under protests.
