Built at the beginning of the 14th century, Piel Castle once protected the local harbour on the island from Scottish raids. Stones from a nearby beach were used to construct the castle, which now belongs to English Heritage. Although the castle has suffered from sea erosion, the ruins are still a dramatic place to visit.
