It was built, albeit with a primordial aspect, at the end of 300 by Bartolomeo III, governor of Parma, Piacenza and Cremona. It is presumed however that it was built, as for most of the castles located especially in the plains, on previous fortifications inside the ancient "castrum". Residence of Marcantonio Martinengo (1546) who, in the service of Venice, distinguished himself in the battle of Lepanto, the scene of wars and family betrayals, as well as loves and incest at court, it passed ownership several times to the various descendants of the family until the second half of the 18th century, a period in which a Martinengo lived there for the last time.

The castle stands in the main square of Villachiara, with cylindrical towers and the ancient moat now transformed into a lawn, it is nice to stop and visit the other castles in the area as well

Nice to look at, a little urbanized because there isn't much left of the castle itself. But it makes a scene and it's worth stopping by along the way.
