Mataranka is known as “the never never”. This is where Aeneas and Jeanie Gunn lived. Jeanie wrote the famous book about Elsey Station. The title: “We of the Never Never”. This book is now part of Australian history and folklore. There is a replica of the house on site, which allows you to imagine how isolated and hard life was at that time for the early settlers. They said: "once you visit Mataranka you’ll never never leave!"
A short walk from Mataranka Homestead is the Mataranka Thermal Pool, surrounded by palm trees and at a constant temperature of 34 degrees you can enjoy a bath - not necessarily refreshing but an experience.
