The German Wine Gate marks the beginning of the German Wine Route. It was built in the Third Reich to make the winegrowing region better known. Even today, an imperial eagle can be seen on the building. The swastika, which the eagle held in its claws, was removed after the end of the Second World War.

The Weintor dates from the time of the Nazi dictatorship. After an above-average wine harvest in 1934, there was a dramatic fall in prices. The Nazis used the economic crisis in the sense of their anti-Semitic propaganda, Jewish wine merchants were blamed for the situation and banned from work. The German Wine Route including the Weintor was created in 1935 as a widely visible symbol and part of the ideological rearmament against the neighbor France.
