The north wall, the oldest part, dates from around 1200 and is made of Bentheim sandstone, as are all walls and floors. The lower four sections of the tower date from the 13th century. In 1480 the church was expanded in a south and east direction, creating a two-aisled hall church with two choirs, each with a three-sided closure. The top tower section dates from the same period.

In 1842 the church was converted into a hall space by demolishing the row of columns between the two naves and merging the two choirs. The two gable roofs of the two former naves were then replaced by a high gable roof that covered the entire church. After the city fire of 1862, the building was restored and the pointed arch windows were replaced by round arch windows. New stained glass windows were placed in it, made by Herman Veldhuis.
