Stifone is a fraction of the municipality of Narni, in the province of Terni, located along the left bank of the Nera river and along the Via Ortana. The town, at 93 m asl, is dominated by the rocky cliffs on which the overhanging castle of Taizzano rests. According to data from the 2001 ISTAT census, it is populated by 41 inhabitants. The abundance of water, both river and spring, has greatly benefited the economy of the place in the past. Stifone was known since the Middle Ages for the number of its water mills. Near the river there is still the port of ancient Narnia, which covered a certain importance from Roman times until the 18th century, because it was used to transport timber, bricks and foodstuffs from Umbria to Rome. On the cascades of spring water near Mola Alberti, at the instigation of engineer Aldobrando Netti, a native of Stifone and pioneer of electricity in Italy, two of the first Italian hydroelectric power plants were also put into operation in 1892, also used for illuminate the city of Narni. Since 1939 they have been submerged by the artificial reservoir used to feed the former Valdarno plant. The basin has also covered the mouth of several natural springs that color the waters of an intense turquoise.

Stifone is a truly special place. It can be reached via a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Nera river and which leads directly into the tiny village whose main feature is water. You can visit the spring, whose waters flow inside the town, and the ancient Roman shipyard.

Congratulations Valter Your preparation on the subject seems to make you understand how much you are related to the area or at least instill desire to visit it ... unfortunately I am areas that I have never seen but that in spring I plan to visit with the bike doing maybe a piece of Via Francigena .. we'll see .. good parties to you and those close to you from the province of Lecco 👍🏞️
