Around the years of 1280, Count Walram von Jülich built a castle on this site. About 300 years later, it becomes a Renaissance-style castle. Extensive destruction by French occupation forces in the period from 1794 to 1804. Further damage brought 1944/45 American artillery fire on the Rurfront. Ruin security and restoration work followed with some interruption in the years 1957 to 2002.
