The Mortirolo is one of the most loved and feared passes by those who cycle in northern Italy. Located in Lombardy, it connects the towns of Mazzo, Tovo Sant'Agata, Edolo and Monno, thus uniting Valtellina with Val Camonica. The slopes, especially on the Mazzo and Tovo slopes, are very challenging. On these ramps Marco Pantani, in 1994, accomplished one of his most memorable feats: a statue is dedicated to him towards the middle of the Mazzo slope.

Beautiful climb, from any side you face it.
Pass located at 1850m, reachable from different sides (from Incudine or from Monno in Val Camonica and from Mazzo di Valtellina the most famous, but also from Grosio or from Aprica) via narrow roads for pastoral use. Famous for the crazy slope percentages. Recommended in the morning in the summer due to the high traffic of motorcyclists in the central hours.

The ascent of Tovo di Sant'Agata, about 1km southwest of Mazzo, is much harder than the classic Giro climb from Mazzo. In the first 9km, both climbs are similar in slope. The last 1.5 km are with 23% maximum slope over several 100m away, over wavy concrete, the purest horror. With 36-29 in my opinion just as feasible. After 11km this climb hits the Mazzo track for the last 150 meters. Also used as part of the Granfondo Stelvio Santini.

The Mortirolo's name derives from the Italian for 'dead' and includes 32 torturous turns.

The climb from Mazzo di Valtellina is the ‘official’ route.

The whole climb is tough, but the most difficult section starts around the San Matteo Church and continues until around kilometer 10. During the last couple of kilometers the gradient becomes a bit “easier” ( under 10% average), but for many cyclists it feels like the hardest part of the climb because the legs are just so tired at that point.

Choosing the right gearing is of paramount importance. Even Alberto Contador goes for 34/32 when climbing the Mortirolo Pass.

The climb’s maximum gradient of 18% is shortly after the church.

Once you reach the Pantani Monument, you can give yourself a bit of encouragement knowing that the worst is behind you and there is only about a 1/3 of the climb left.

The Mortirolo is a real beast! On paper, it sounds relatively harmless. At least if you don't read any further after the height of 1,852 meters. This is the north ramp, the ascent of which begins in Mazzo. It is the classic climb that is also part of the Giro d'Italia. Its incline is pretty rough, and stepping out of the saddle becomes your preferred posture here. At the top, the typical bicycle racing paintings greet you on the street. Made! One less important item on your bucket list.

I cycled counterclockwise from Ponte di Legno over the Gavia Pass to Bormio and then over the Mortirolo Pass to get a nice circular tour. I, for one, tried to conserve my energy, but the uneven gradients are also mentally demanding, and you're really glad when you've conquered the approximately 1100m of elevation gain over about 14km. The approximately 1300m of elevation gain to the Gavia Pass, spread over about 17km, felt much more pleasant, as it was more evenly spaced. Including the approximately 600m of elevation gain to the starting point, it was actually 3000m of elevation gain. Unfortunately, both passes are never car- and motorcycle-free at the same time.

Mortirolo is best known for Pantani's great feat in 1994, celebrated with a monument at hairpin bend no. 11. I recommend taking advantage of the days reserved for bicycles, closed to vehicular traffic, which they do, with a very laudable initiative, a couple of times a season. On such occasions the very hard climb becomes pleasant and the descent is equally beautiful, and in safety, possibly also from the other sides,

Good surface, the climb is shaded in the forest, except the last kilometers.
