Immersed in the splendid panorama of the Crete Senesi, Asciano has been inhabited since ancient times (Assianum). This treasure trove of art and history offers numerous monuments and two highly appreciated museums: the Palazzo Corboli Museum and the Cassioli Museum. Furthermore, between the towns of Leonina and Mucigliani stands the Site Transitoire, a stone work by Jean-Paul Philippe.

Asciano is an Italian municipality of 7,076 inhabitants in the province of Siena in Tuscany. It is located about 30 km south-east of the capital, in the heart of the Crete Senesi. The current historic center, of medieval origins, preserves valuable monuments. The western and southern part of the municipal territory is characterized by a succession of biancane and gullies that form the evocative landscape with lunar characteristics of the Crete Senesi, known since the Middle Ages as the Accona Desert.
It is one of the best-known refreshment points in the Eroica. From here begins the most famous stretch of dirt road of both the Eroica and the Strade Bianche: Monte Sante Marie.
