The lower basin is part of the pumped storage plant Markersbach. In times of low energy demand, the water is pumped from the lower basin into the upper basin, so that in times of high energy demand by means of turbines electrical energy can be recovered.

Anyway, it is a beautiful lake that is suitable for a break. You can fish in it or take a bath. The circuit around the upper basin is ideal for inline skating.

The pumped storage plant Markersbach (PSW Markersbach) in Saxony, which went online in 1979, is the second largest pumped storage power plant in Germany with an output of almost 1050 megawatts and is one of the largest hydropower plants of its kind in Europe.

The shut-off structure of the lower basin (location) is a 57 m high (51 m above the valley floor) and 393 m long Erddamm with asphalt outer seal. It has a volume of about 920,000 m³, the area at full congestion is about 49 ha with a storage volume of 7.7 million m³. The maximum storage volume is 7.975 million m³. The dam crown lies at 563 m above sea level. NN. The dammed water is the Great Mittweida.
