    It is not the highest mountain in Schleswig-Holstein, but for cyclists it is one of the most beautiful and striking Ice Age peaks north of the Elbe and an attraction for many a weekend trip: the Aschberg in the Hüttener Berge Nature Park. With a final height of 98 meters, it towers over the many waves in the region and offers a summit feeling that is rather rare here.
    On a cul-de-sac, starting from the village of Ascheffel, you can climb a good 70 meters in one go over a distance of almost one and a half kilometres. In good weather, the view from the hilltop extends from the Schlei to the Baltic Sea. In terms of cultural history, the Aschberg also offers a seven meter high statue of Bismarck that is well worth seeing. However, the iron chancellor is not alone. There is also a small hotel complex on the site, which blends harmoniously into the landscape and has a twenty-meter-high observation tower. Conclusion: In addition to Hessenstein and Pariner Berg, it is one of the top three viewpoints in the land between the seas.

        The 98 m high Aschberg is an ideal starting point for exploring the Hüttener mountains.
        At the end of the 19th century, a 10m high wooden observation tower was erected on the Aschberg. This so-called Kaiser Wilhelm Tower existed until 1918.
        The current new Aschberg tower was completed in 2013 and has a height of approx. 20m. On the highest point of the Aschberg next to the observation tower, the names of the 20 communities in the surrounding Hüttener Berge nature park are written on stones in a small stone circle.
        It is very worthwhile to climb the tower and it even costs nothing. That has become rare these days. At the top you can enjoy wonderful views over the nature park. There is even an elevator that takes you upstairs for free.
        The last time I was there on October 16th, 2022, it was broken, but the ascent is manageable and a little more exercise doesn't hurt either.
