When you visit the Shofuku-ji Temple in Hakata, you take a stroll back in time to visit Japan's first Zen temple. Shofuku-ji is a Rinzai temple (Rinzai focuses on enlightenment of consciousness). It was founded in 1195 by the priest Eisai with the support of the samurai lord Minamoto no Yoritomo.
The temple brings the Zen philosophy into the design and aesthetics of the site, the temple complex, the building design and the building functions. The main halls for special ceremonies are based on the principles of Zen. The site is designed in the philosophy of Zen Buddhism to bring enlightenment to those who visit the temple. A Zen temple is different from pre-Kamakura temples. The buildings and facilities are not symmetrical.
