Its two towers—crafted quite differently, perhaps at first glance giving the viewer a sense of a lack of symmetry—surmount not only the roofs of the Gothic cathedral itself, built at the end of the 12th century, but also the city of Chartres as a whole. They are clearly visible even from a great distance. The cathedral, like so many in France, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title "Notre Dame" (Our Lady).
