Fort William Henry was constructed in 1755 to secure British dominance in the region after Colonial forces secured modern day Lake George Village from the French during the French and Indian War. The fort was used to launch attacks against Fort Ticonderoga to the north. It was named after Prince William Henry, grandson of King George II.

British Fort William Henry, named after Prince William Henry, a grandson of King George II, was located at the southern end of Lake George in what is now New York State. During the French and Indian War of 1754-1763 it was built as a launching pad for attacks against French Fort Carillon (Fort Ticonderoga) and was part of a chain of British and French fortifications along the important waterway from New York to Quebec.
