Above the city of Harburg stands the castle of the same name, an extensive medieval complex from the 11th / 12th centuries. Century. The condition of the 18th century has been largely preserved. The castle belongs to the princes Wallerstein.

Harburg already had five wooden city gates around 1500: the Brucktor (at the bridge), the Egelseetor (leads to Egelsee), the Nördlinger Tor or Depth Gate, the Vesttor (leads to the Veste or Burg) and the Griestor or Donauwörther Tor . The gates were closed every evening to prevent unwanted people such as thieves, robbers, beggars and pirates from entering the city. A city wall was largely unnecessary, since the city was almost completely enclosed by house walls. Between 1861 and 1863 all gates were demolished - officially because of their dilapidation, high maintenance costs and health risks for the residents. However, it is now known that people simply no longer liked them. There are now plaques on the former locations of the gates.
