National Park Station – doesn't that sound wonderful, like a stop with fresh air, beautiful views, and cheerful travelers in hiking boots? Indeed, Bad Schandau Station fulfills all the clichés that spontaneously spring to mind: Nestled in the rocky green landscape of Saxon Switzerland and located directly on the Elbe River, the Tuscan-style station building with its green grounds promises holiday joy at first glance. The spacious and subtly landscaped forecourt exudes a soothing tranquility, but above all, it allows the charming surroundings to be the true star of the ensemble.

There's no trace of the typical station hustle and bustle, even among travelers; the clocks actually seem to tick slower here in the countryside. Yet Bad Schandau is the hub of the Upper Elbe Valley; one-fifth of the two and a half million annual visitors to Saxon Switzerland disembark and change trains here.

Hardly any other place in the region has so much customer contact, and hardly any other train station has been so consistently geared to the needs of tourists in recent years: barrier-free platforms, new bus stops with adjacent park-and-ride and bicycle parking spaces – everything is inviting, spotlessly clean, and well-signposted. "A small kingdom for tourists traveling by train," exulted the special prize jury during the on-site test at Bad Schandau station.
