The climb to the Bernina Pass starts from Tirano (440 m asl) and is 34 km long, in a wonderful valley with spectacular views over the Bernina glacier.

The first part of the road is a very challenging one, with steep slopes until the Poschiavo lake. You can easily cycle to Poschiavo (the town) even on secondary roads and bike paths. Then the climb, which is very long and hard, starts again up to the pass.

The average gradient of the slope is 7.5%, the maximum slope is 9,5%. The vertical drop is over 1.890 m.

The Bernina Pass road is wonderful to drive from both sides.
The difference in altitude on the Italian side is approx. 1890 m and the Swiss side from the north is approx. 610 m.

These numbers should give you some respect: 37 kilometers! 1,880 vertical meters! If you want to conquer Tirano's Bernina Pass over the South Ramp you need to have a good deal of stamina. You will be rewarded with majestic views of the Piz Bernina. Time to enjoy the view, you have enough. The road is very well developed and in between, there is also a flatter piece on the Lago di Poschiavo, which is also very well suited for a swimming break.
At the pass there is a refreshment stop and freshly strengthened you can tackle the nearly 20-kilometer-long descent to St. Moritz.
