The memorial commemorates an important military conflict. On June 23, 1758, the Allies fought French troops there as part of the Seven Years' War. The Allied troops consisted of soldiers from Kurhannover, Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Great Britain, Hesse-Kassel and Prussia.

A total of almost 90,000 soldiers clashed. 47,000 French fought there against 32,000 Allies.

Both sides suffered heavy losses. On the French side, 4,000 men lost their lives in the Battle of Krefeld and on the Allied side, 1,700 soldiers died. Of the total of 5700 casualties, 2867 died in Hückelsmay.

"During the Seven Years' War, the Battle of Krefeld was fought on June 23, 1758. The area of today's Forstwald was a staging area and also part of the battlefield. The French had taken up positions behind the Landwehr. The decisive factor was the commander-in-chief of the Allied Army, Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, with an attack from the south after a bypass via Vorst and Anrath. The battle was decided late in the evening. The French abandoned the battlefield and retreated via Osterath to Neuss.

The Battle of Hückelsmay was by no means a mere local conflict. It was part of a virtually worldwide struggle during the Seven Years' War."
