The church in Ermershausen was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he, along with his brother Andrew, was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men." According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two-millennia-long line of popes—currently Leo XIV—follows his succession. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted holding two keys. This attribute refers to the biblical passage in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19). Peter, along with Paul, is also known as the "Prince of the Apostles"; their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.

The pillar of democracy dates back to the village's resistance to the local government reform in the 1970s.

According to the Maroldsweisach website: "Johannes Rau, as a 10-year-old, was placed in Maroldsweisach in 1941/42 as part of the evacuation of children to the countryside. The evacuation was ordered at the time due to the threat of bombing of the Ruhr region. Johannes Rau and his older brother Hartmut stayed in Maroldsweisach for almost a year. Both attended school here. Johannes Rau already caught the attention of his teacher and the local pastor because of his active participation in class and his inexhaustible passion for reading in the parish library."

The Pillar of Democracy was ceremoniously inaugurated for Ermershausen's 975th anniversary. Ermershausen will celebrate its 975th anniversary from June 28th to 30th. The celebration follows a ceremony held the day before: the awarding of the title "Place of Democracy" by the Bavarian State Parliament.
