The church tower was originally a Romanesque defensive tower from the 13th century. The round-arch friezes that adorn the tower at a height of approximately four meters are typical of this period. After the tower lost its function as a defensive structure, the villagers established a chapel on the ground floor. The chapel in the tower was repeatedly expanded over the centuries; the current extension dates from 1664.

Marienplatz is the historic center of Freising's old town and is dominated by the striking Marian Column. This column made of red marble was donated by Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigismund in 1674 and serves as an official surveying point and as a symbolic city center. The Marian Column stands on a square marble base, at the corners of which the statues of Saints Korbinian, Sigismund, Franz Xaver and Franz of Assisi kneel. This arrangement is reminiscent of the Marian Column on Munich's Marienplatz, which served as a model. Marienplatz is surrounded by important buildings, including the town hall, the parish church of St. George and the historic Asam building. It serves as a central location for city festivals and hosts the Green Market twice a week, which attracts locals and visitors alike. A stroll through Marienplatz offers a comprehensive insight into Freising's history and architecture and is a must for any visitor to the city.
