Stage village of the Via Francigena (VFF24). La Chaussée-sur-Marne is a Marne village located between Châlons-en-Champagne and Vitry-le-François. The village consists of two hamlets, Mutigny (to the west) and Coulmier (to the east), and is supplied with water by the river Fion, the Marne and the Marne tributary canal. It is served in particular by the national road 44.

Nativity of Notre-Dame, church built from the 12th to the 18th century. It was bombed in September 1914. The last restorations began in 1931, but were bombed again in June 1940, which required a new restoration campaign from 1947. The church has a beautiful black tower on a dome.

Historically, Pogny has an interesting background. In 1107, the village was known as “Villa Santa Maria de Pugneio” and later as “Pugero”. The village was an important transit route connecting the royal power with the eastern provinces. It is said that Joan of Arc passed through Pogny on her way to meet Charles VII at Chinon. Today, Pogny offers a peaceful, rural setting with a range of amenities including a bakery, supermarket, café-restaurant, and craftsmen. The village is set in beautiful natural surroundings between the Marne and the canal, and has a number of green areas and parks. The Via Francigena vélo passes through Pogny and once again the half-timbered houses are striking.

The Marne side canal runs along the river from Vitry-le-François to Dizy; it is entirely located in the Marne department and serves the towns of Châlons-en-Champagne and Épernay. It measures 67 km and includes 15 locks of the Freycinet gauge (39 m by 5.10). It was opened during the first half of the 19th century. State property, it is managed by Voies navigables de France.
