Frederick William III (* August 3, 1770, Potsdam, † June 7, 1840, Berlin) was King of Prussia (from 1797) and Margrave of Brandenburg (until 1806). He belonged to the noble House of Hohenzollern. During his reign, he also stayed in Merseburg, as the city was the Prussian seat of government. A life-size equestrian statue was erected in honor of the king by Louis Tuaillon in 1918. The bronze monument, also the last work by the German sculptor, was unceremoniously erected in the palace gardens in 1935, where it has been located again since 1998. The Ständehaus (House of Estates) is one of the most historic buildings in the cathedral and palace complex. It was built as a monumental structure at the end of the 19th century and served as the representative seat of the state parliament of the Prussian province of Saxony. Today, with its excellent facilities, the Ständehaus offers an exclusive setting for any event and is the perfect backdrop for a wedding in a historic setting. The castle garden and the castle garden salon are part of the historic castle ensemble. The castle garden was created in 1661 as a baroque pleasure garden. Today it is one of the 50 selected, historically most significant gardens in the "Garden Dreams" tourist network. The obelisks erected around 1690 are dedicated to the first ducal couples. The castle garden, which has been completely renovated with disabled access and made more attractive, is open all year round free of charge and offers peace and relaxation as the green heart in the middle of the city.
