Consecrated in 1122, it is one of the oldest churches in the Vogtland. In 1224 it was donated to the Teutonic Order, which expanded the originally Romanesque basilica in the following years to its current size with a transept. A further conversion, into a three-aisled hall church with an impressive star vault, took place around 1548 and is considered a prime example of high Gothic interior design. The 52 m high twin towers received the baroque turrets in 1644 and have since shaped the silhouette of the city - visible from afar. Since Easter 2023, an impressive triptych has adorned St. John's Church. This stained glass picture above the altar shows a modern depiction of the resurrection of Jesus. The Leipzig painter Michael Triegel designed this "resurrection window" on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the consecration of St. John's Church.
