Conques, an important stop for pilgrims on the Way of St. James, which can be found on every corner here. The town itself is like a large museum, it is also a popular destination for architecture lovers.

In the 18th century, the site was transformed into a mill, which still works today. Superb mill in ocher stone typical of the constructions of the valley. It was once the property of the bishops and now belongs to private owners.

Conques-en-Rouergue and its abbey are jewels for walkers. The town is one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France" and is labeled "Grand Site Occitanie". It is also a major stage of the "Roads of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle". The Sainte-Foy abbey church is a nugget of Romanesque art, embellished with stained glass windows by the artist Pierre Soulages.

This small city is a city of water. It is bordered by no less than four rivers: the Lot, the Truyère, the Goul, and the Selves. As a result of this aspect so particular and so rich, part of its territory has been defined as a Natura 2000 site. Thus the Truyère gorges and the lower Goult valley are home to two species of endangered animals: the European otter and the sculpin.

Once again we have reached a milestone on the "Via Podiensis", our pilgrimage route to St. James (Chemin de Saint Jacques) through France; and here in Conques, too, our small group of pilgrims is impressed by the extremely impressive atmosphere of the place. But we still have to move on the next morning... first on the 'Via Podiensis' to Saint-Jean Pied-de-Port at the foot of the Pyrenees, and after crossing it through northern Spain to the Galician 'Santiago de Compostela' with the tomb of the apostle James the Greater.

Again and again on the pilgrimage route - like here on the 10th stage of the "Via Podiensis" from Conques to Livinhac - valleys have to be crossed and rivers to be crossed. Just after leaving Conques, this is the Dourdou. The bridges are sometimes comparatively modern, sometimes medieval and sometimes even older in origin. But the most important thing is that they make it possible – of course not only, but also for us pilgrims on the Chemin de Saint Jacques – to get to the other side.

Saint Roch, to whom this chapel is dedicated as patron, was born in Montpellier, France, in the mid-14th century. He is popularly known - along with Saint Sebastian - as a "plague saint". Characteristic of the depiction of Rochus in paintings and as a statue is that he usually points to a plague bump on his leg; Often a dog can also be seen at his feet, because according to legend, when he was caring for plague patients, he was ill himself and withdrew into solitude, providing him with bread every day. The memorial day of Saint Roch in the calendar of saints is August 16th.

Conques is a place of the best, born from the depths of European history and left to us by our ancestors almost intact. Entirely made up of half-timbered houses, the village is grouped in a photogenic way around the abbey church in its center. The main structures of the abbey were built in the 12th century. Before that, there was only a hermitage, founded in the 4th century. By 1840, the abbey had almost disappeared as its destruction was systematically pursued during the French Revolution. PROSPER MÉRIMÈE, writer and archaeologist, intervened in time to save the church but not the Stations of the Cross, which had already been completely dismantled. The tympanum above the portal of the abbey church is the absolute highlight of the abbey. It is a large semi-circular band of stone on which the Last Judgment is explained in pictures. On one side you see heaven with huge slices of meat and barrels of wine, on the other hell with fiery torments and unstoppable disorder.

I can highly recommend an overnight stay in the Abbey of Conques. There are enough places, the bedrooms are very large. Each dormitory can accommodate up to 10 pilgrims in bunk beds. It is an experience to stay in such a venerable building. Breakfast and dinner are served in the large dining room. Both were excellent and the mood among the pilgrims was great. Participation in the evening mass is of course completely voluntary. The monks have even encouraged foreigners to read an intercession in their native language.

Conques is one of the "plus beaux village de France", the most beautiful villages in France. The ancient village with its many ancient ruins around the impressive abbey of Sainte-Foy (d. Holy Fides) gives a charming impression of bygone times. Built in the middle of the 11th century, Conques flourished, the cathedral was an important stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. Pilgrims are invited to join the monks in the choir of the church. You can also stay in the abbey.
