Notre-Dame d'Avioth became a basilica in 1993 and is also called "the cathedral of the fields". This flamboyant Gothic masterpiece is surprisingly large in the center of a small village in the north of the French department of Meuse, in the heart of the former county of Chiny, near the abbey of Orval and the citadel of Montmédy. Its construction began in the mid-13th century, after the miraculous appearance of a statue of the Virgin Mary, and extended over three phases: the towers and naves in the 13th century, the choir and the sacristy in the 14th century and the merger between the western and eastern parts from 1375 to 1400. The building was classified as a historic monument in 1840. The basilica is famous for its "Recevresse", located at the church enclosure. Considered unique in the world, this small lacework was designed to welcome the devotions of the pilgrims and receive their offerings. It has been on display in the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris since 1898. Until the end of the 18th century, Avioth was a respite church where the Virgin was said to temporarily revive stillborn children in order for them to receive baptism. Today, pilgrims still come in large numbers to pray before the statue of Our Lady of Avioth, especially on July 16 during the ancestral pilgrimage.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Avioth is a Gothic church dating from the 14th-15th century, of a surprising size for a village of 150 inhabitants. It has been classified as a French historic monument since 18402. The flamboyant Gothic building separated from the rest of the church is a unique architectural masterpiece of its kind. Every year in July, Our Lady of Avioth attracts pilgrims from all over the world. You can explore the basilica and its surroundings, admire the intricate stone carvings and the statue of the Black Madonna, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this rural sanctuary. The basilica is also a stop on the Via Arduinna, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

The Recevresse was restored by Boeswilwald from 1844 to 1846. The Recevresse is a unique monument in the world. A full-size reproduction is in the Museum of French Monuments in Paris. This flamboyant Gothic masterpiece was probably built on the site of the discovery of the miraculous statue. It replaces the first modest oratorio. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, when the image of Our Lady of Avioth was finally placed in the church, another image of the Virgin took its place to receive the offering of the pilgrims in her name. This statue was called: the receiving Virgin (la vierge recevresse). As time passed, the name of Recevresse was given to the monument.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Avioth is a religious building in Gothic style, built in the 14th century and located in the former county of Chiny (today in the north of the French department of Meuse). It has been classified as a monument historique since the first list of 1840. Given its grandeur and the small size of the village of Avioth, the church is also called "the Cathedral of the Fields", because it appears to have been built in no man's land. It owes its location and size to the fact that the village was located on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. The stained glass windows of the Saint-Jean chapel are thanks to the master glassblower Jean-Jacques Grüber (1930). Thus, for eight centuries, the Basilica of Avioth was built and maintained through gifts and sacrifices. This is still the case today. Today this work is continued by the members of the Association of Friends of the Basilica of Avioth, who manage the donations of the many pilgrims. Together with the municipality, the Conseil général de la Meuse and the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles de Lorraine, we ensure the maintenance and management of the basilica. The handcuffs above the statue were placed there by prisoners in gratitude to Our Lady of Avioth for their liberation. The coat of arms on the wall is that of Gilles de Rodemack, provost of Montmédy and governor of Luxembourg at the beginning of the 15th century.
