The 18th-century story of a beast that kills humans at night, localized in Auvers and handed down in local history, has endured through the ages and found its way into the fantasy series "Teen Wolf." The story surrounding the heroine, Marie-Jeanne Valet, is described in detail on an online fan site. According to biblical accounts, the apostle "Saint-Jacques" was the first person to be executed for his faith, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, making him an early martyr (blood witness) of Christianity. His tomb in the town named after him, "Santiago de Compostela" (Galicia, Spain), is one of the most famous and important pilgrimage destinations in the world, often ranked third after Jerusalem and Rome. Today, the day this article is being written, is his feast day in the calendar of saints. When this date falls on a Sunday, the Catholic Church celebrates a special "Holy Year" there.

After the Blessed Virgin Mary, "Sainte MARIE MADELEINE" is the woman most frequently mentioned in the writings of the New Testament. Originally called "Mary of Magdala" after her place of origin on the Sea of Galilee, over time the name "Mary Magdalene" has been formed. According to the biblical accounts, she is one of the women and men who followed Jesus of Nazareth. According to the testimony of the evangelists, Mary Magdalene is also one of the three women who, after the crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ, wanted to anoint the body on Easter morning after the Sabbath rest, and the very first person who ever met the Risen Christ. In theology, she is therefore also known as the "Apostle of the Apostles". The feast day of Sainte Marie-Madeleine in the calendar of saints is July 22nd.

The linguistic proximity of the "Pont Eiffel", which spans the river here in the French town of Monistrol-d'Allier, and the low mountain range "Eifel" in the far west of Germany is no coincidence: The family of the designer - whose world-famous Tower of Paris (named after its builder) is probably known to everyone - has German roots. The ancestors of the Eiffel Tower builder Gustave EIFFEL come from the Eifel town of Marmagen (in the Euskirchen district, North Rhine-Westphalia). The village square there - if you are interested, see the following hiking highlight https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/1830307 - is named after him.

Saint-Privat-d'Allier is a pretty village which offers magnificent views of the Allier gorges. Its ruined castle and church stand proudly on the granite plateau of Margeride.

You wouldn't expect to find an Eiffel bridge in the heart of Haute-Loire! The Eiffel company obtained the contract in 1887 for the construction of this bridge over the Allier. It was completed in 1888, just after the construction of the Garabit viaduct and the framework of the Statue of Liberty in New York. This work made it possible to open up the village, while providing it with an important economic network. The transport of materials, previously impossible in this mountainous area, very isolated at the time, was no longer possible. The bridge was restored in the 2000s to maintain the local economy.

The place emerged as a settlement around a castle from the 13th century, which has been largely destroyed since the 17th century. The village developed mainly due to its location on the Via Podiensis and offers several hostels. It is also an important base for white water sports enthusiasts on the Allier River.
