The birthplace of General Lafayette (who played a crucial role in the American War of Independence) is here in a tiny Auvergne village.

Nestled in the heart of the Allier valley, the chapel of Sainte-Marie-des-Chazes is one of the architectural jewels of Haut-Allier. Built in the 13th century, it reveals an Auvergne Romanesque style.

This village sits on top of a rocky outcrop. This cliff is the result of a lava flow dated 1.6 million years ago. The basalt organs found in the town are remarkable. They measure more than seven meters in height. This natural curiosity is the result of an unusual volcanic phenomenon. It was a slow cooling that allowed the lava to solidify.
