The birthplace of General Lafayette (who played a crucial role in the American War of Independence) is here in a tiny Auvergne village.

Lavaudieu is a charming village located in Auvergne, in the Haute-Loire department. Classified among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France”, it is particularly known for its Benedictine abbey founded in the 11th century by Robert de Turlande

This village sits on top of a rocky outcrop. This cliff is the result of a lava flow dated 1.6 million years ago. The basalt organs found in the town are remarkable. They measure more than seven meters in height. This natural curiosity is the result of an unusual volcanic phenomenon. It was a slow cooling that allowed the lava to solidify. It then takes on this characteristic colonnade appearance.

This castle is definitely worth a visit. From this ancient fortress, you will have an incredible view of the village of Saint-Ilpize and Villeneuve d'Allier. Its strategic position allowed the Dauphins of Auvergne to monitor the Allier gorges.

If the ruins are not of incredible interest to visit, the breathtaking view of the valley from the castle is well worth the detour and the few drops of sweat on the climb.
