Bring binoculars to better observe the many different birds and animals at Kranichwoog! Also, there are numerous well-designed information panels and a flyer about the "Natura 2000 Kranichwoog Adventure Trail" with lots of explanations! An interesting and natural forest. The branches lie untidy between the trees. I noticed that there are a lot of birch trees growing here.

In order to enable the animals at Kranichwoog to be observed from a safe distance, it was decided in January 2021 to build an observation tower on the edge of the area.

The tunnel is not a tunnel but an underpass (according to the standard, underpasses are not considered tunnel structures if they were built using the open construction method and are shorter than 80 meters), but that's just a side note. It's not a highlight either way.

From the approximately 20m high lookout and observation tower you have a beautiful view of the water areas of the Kranichwoog. The associated Natura 2000 adventure trail also leads past it.

The Kranichwoog is a nature conservation project run by NABU Rhineland-Palatinate. As part of the renaturation of the moorland, artificial shallow water ponds were created to provide new habitat for animal and plant species. In addition, water buffaloes were settled in the Kranichwoog to keep the vegetation on the pastures and water areas short.

The Schachenwald is a nature reserve in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The approximately 64 hectare area includes parts of the towns of Hütschenhausen, Ramstein and Spesbach. The aim of the protection is to preserve the “sand dune forests with numerous boundary lines (ecotones) as well as the alder forests to the south as biotope potential for typical and rare, wild-growing plant species and as habitats and partial habitats for rare animal species and corresponding communities”.
