Monpazier is a charming little town in the Dordogne, southwest France, that takes you straight back to the Middle Ages. It was founded in 1284 and looks almost exactly the same today as it did then. The market square with its old market hall, where you can buy fresh, local delicacies, is particularly special. The narrow streets and old stone houses make the town super cozy. When you stroll through Monpazier, you feel like you're in another time, and there are plenty of small shops and cafés that invite you to linger. Magnificent bastide

The village is dominated by its 13th century castle, remodeled in the 15th century, where the lords of Roquefeuil lived, and by its 11th century Romanesque church, both listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments. Old blast furnaces and mills recall the town's industrial past. The town is crossed by the Briolance, a first category river and tributary of the Lémance.

The village of Lacapelle-Biron experienced dark times during the passage of the 2nd SS Armored Division Das Reich in 1944. In memory of this period, a departmental deportation monument was erected on the village square. Nearby, the hamlet of Saint-Avit offers a beautiful architectural ensemble that is well worth a visit.
