At the beginning of the 1930s, there were still about 45 Jewish families living in Idar-Oberstein. That was about 130 - 150 people. Many of them emigrated to the USA. Nevertheless, 65 Jewish people from Idar-Oberstein were deported to extermination camps during the war, where they were killed.

The heart of Idar-Oberstein is the old town of Oberstein with the pedestrian zone (main street), the historic market square and the shops, cafes and restaurants. Around the market square there are beautiful street cafes, small shops and there is a view of the Felsenkirche.
