Medieval castle built around the year 1000 by the Count of Anjou, Foulques Nerra. It was only at the end of the 10th century that the Mauges region, previously under Breton control, was incorporated into Anjou. The construction of a stronghold at Montrevault was intended to show its Breton and Poitevin neighbors who the new ruler was.
