The old water reservoir on the Süchtelner Höhen is one of the most important examples of the development of modern drinking water supply in Viersen and the surrounding area. It is located on the Süchtelner Höhen, a low ridge just northwest of the Süchteln district, at the highest natural location in the area, approximately 90 meters above sea level. This elevation made it ideal for collecting water and supplying it under pressure to the lower-lying urban area without the need for constant high pumping costs. Around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the demand for a reliable drinking water supply grew louder as Viersen's population and industry grew, and traditional wells and springs were no longer sufficient. In this context, an underground water reservoir was built on the Süchtelner Höhen in 1907 as part of the expansion of the regional water supply system. This reservoir, often referred to as a Wassererdbehälter (water reservoir), had a storage capacity of approximately 400 cubic meters and served to buffer water for peak demand, as well as to ensure constant pressure in the pipes and for firefighting purposes. What makes this old water reservoir special is not only its functional role but also its design. The building's facades are decorated with ornaments depicting motifs of aquatic flora and fauna, including stylized chough heads and fins, giving the structure an artistic quality that contrasts with its utilitarian function and is typical of residential architecture around 1900. These ornamentations indicate that attention was paid to both practical and aesthetic aspects of infrastructural buildings at the time. The reservoir remained in use until 1969. When modern techniques and improved infrastructure made it unnecessary to store water locally in this way, the reservoir's function was discontinued. But the structure wasn't simply abandoned or demolished; it later acquired cultural-economic and historical significance by providing insight into the technological development of water distribution in the region. In 2002, the old water reservoir was officially designated a protected monument, indicating that the structure is recognized for its cultural-historical and technical value and is a listed building to ensure its preservation for future generations. It thus contributes to the historical heritage of the Viersen region and is a recognizable landmark for visitors to the Süchtelner Höhen.

Along the path stands an ornate wooden sculpture of a dragonfly, symbolizing the many dragonflies that live in the water-rich Swalm Valley. It's a beautiful landmark and photo spot during the walk.
