The sight of that lady—whom we know as the "Statue of Liberty," or "Lady Liberty" in English—raising her arm with the torch in an impressive pose, is familiar to almost everyone; and most people, when hearing her name, naturally picture not this place, but the harbor of New York in the United States. Perhaps many don't know, however, that this famous Statue of Liberty is actually European, as she was a gift to the American people from France (dedicated in 1886 by US President Grover Cleveland). Incidentally, in the language of her original homeland, she bears the evocative name "La Liberté éclairant le monde" (Liberty Illuminating the World).
