When we encounter the patronage of Saint Thomas, most people outside Great Britain probably think involuntarily of the time of Christ, some two thousand years back. This is because one of the twelve apostles whom Jesus called to follow him bears this name. In the Gospels, he is known as "Didymos," which means "twin" in Greek. In this case, however, the chosen patronage refers to Saint Thomas Becket (1118–1170), also known as Thomas of Canterbury after the place of his episcopal see and martyrdom. The 3 bridges between Le Havre and Rouen (Normandy, Tancarville and Brotonne (the latter quite dangerous for bicycles) are very high because they have to allow passage of large tonnage boats intended to supply Paris, the Seine being an important component. These boats are then unloaded in Rouen onto smaller tonnage boats which go to Paris. This system of ferries, surprisingly free, is therefore there to compensate for this lack of possible crossings. Do not hesitate to use them, it is really a very nice plus.

Beautiful walk that gives a good and beautiful impression of nature and its inhabitants

The church has obviously been renovated recently - at least that's what it looks like from the outside.

To avoid the extremely high bridges over the Seine, we chose the ferry. We enjoyed the crossing – completely uncomplicated and pleasant. I took photos of the departure times.

It would be interesting to know how this blast furnace came into the garden

A new observatory has been open at the Grand'Mare de Sainte-Opportune since April 2025. (The old one was damaged during a storm.) A must-see for bird lovers and those who love nature. The cottage route is very pleasant, and you can enjoy an unforgettable 30-km tour.

The Grand'Mare observatory (free) has been renovated and rebuilt for a few months after two years of work. It's a magnificent view of the birds returning en masse, and luckily, the horses roaming free. Pure bliss.
