The fortress was built to protect the west coast and served for a long time as a notorious prison. The most famous inmates were the master thief Lasse Maja, who, after five years in prison, worked in the prison kitchen for another 15 years, was pardoned by the king (as the only inmate) for his culinary skills, and appointed royal chef; and the only woman, Metta Fock, who was presumably imprisoned innocently and eventually executed.

A wonderful hike for young and old. A certain degree of surefootedness is required, as some sections involve rocks and stones. The hike is also no problem with a dog. The ferry to the island departs every few minutes and costs just 80kr per adult round trip. There are a few nice cafés at the harbor, and you can also find the occasional snack or even a larger meal. In summer, if you don't mind a bit of cold water, you can also enjoy the cool water and refresh yourself at several swimming spots. All around, an island worth seeing.

Amazing bridge with great views. There is a bike path on the bridge that is separated from the road!

Fortress from the 17th century on a site contested by Danes and Swedes for several hundred years. Today there is a cafe and hotel there.

Although the fortress is closed in winter, it is still worth visiting.

Walk around the fortress and listen to the walls telling their stories of kings, saints, power struggles, traitors and prisoners.
