It looks more like a natural refrigerator to me. Many years ago I had a log cabin in the forest, without electricity, only with gas from the gas bottle. Next to the house, but a long way from the outhouse, a similar hole had been dug in the rock, with a thick wooden door in front of it. In the back there was a small chimney for ventilation. This large compartment served as a refrigerator, you could actually cool food there, of course only tightly packed.
