The first church in Mietoinen was the wooden chapel church of St. James in the village of Hietamäki. The chapel and the Hietamäki parish are first mentioned in the Turku Cathedral Black Book in 1366, although the parish is probably older than this. The independent parish is thought to have become the Mynämäki chapel parish in the 14th century. The last church service was held in the Hietamäki chapel in 1731. Kustavintie is a major road, and cycling along it is not safe. There are only a few places where you can cross it safely. Here, however, there is a tunnel underneath the road. If you are planning a route, it's best to use this tunnel to cross the busy road safely.

The separation of church and bell tower is architecturally interesting. The war memorial is across the street.
