A very worthwhile museum and ship

This former school became a museum recently. The building itself was built from scratch in 1888 by teacher Viktor Jansson from Vårdö, who then taught and lived here until his death in 1895.

The four-masted barque Pommern was once one of the Flying P-Liners of the German shipping company F. Laeisz and later sailed for the Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson. Today the Pommern is a museum ship in the port of Mariehamn and can be visited. One of the main attractions in Mariehamn.

The Norra Sandö ferry terminal has a ferry service, Simskälalinjen, that connects the island of Sandö with the island of Östra Simskäla. The route is served by a cable ferry that takes just a few minutes. It runs regularly, usually depending on whether a car arrives at the ferry terminal. Traffic is only interrupted for a few short breaks during the day. A small hut offers shelter from rain, wind or sun.

Anni Blomqvist's house in Simskäla is a museum. Thanks to her fictional character, Stormskärs Maja, she became a beloved author. Her books about life in the Åland archipelago have captivated generations of readers. The novels about Stormskärs Maja were made into a hugely popular television movie in the 1970s, directed by Åke Lindman. Anni Blomqvist was committed to social issues that were close to her heart when it came to her home island of Simskäla in the northern Åland archipelago. After Anni Blomqvist's death, the Åland Cultural Foundation took over the house in Simskäla in accordance with her will and maintains it as a writer's residence and museum, in accordance with her wishes.
