The Meppelerdiep runs from Meppel to Zwartsluis. The current canal was originally a natural waterway and ends in the Zwarte Water. Close to this place is an old toll house.

The Dickninge estate is approximately 75 hectares in size. In the Middle Ages, the Benedictine monastery Dikninge stood on this site. This monastery was a continuation of the Benedictine abbey of Ruinen, which was moved to Dickninge in 1325. Until the 15th century, Dickninge was a so-called double monastery, with separate sections for nuns and monks. After the reform, the monastery was closed in 1602, but it remained inhabited by nuns who remained behind until 1652. The buildings were now in a dilapidated state and were partially demolished.

In the Middle Ages, the Benedictine monastery Dikninge, dedicated to Mary, stood on the site of the large country house. The monastery was a continuation of the Benedictine abbey of Ruinen, which was moved to Dickninge in 1325. De Havixhorst essentially consists of the manor house with outbuildings, garden, canal and surrounding forest. In total, the estate is approximately 100 hectares. The estate is beautifully situated in the stream valley of the Reest, between Meppel and De Wijk. The existence of De Havixhorst is first mentioned in 1409, in the archives of Dickninge Abbey. Since June 2000, a special collection of statues has been on display in the gardens of manor house De Havixhorst. In addition to the permanent collection of sculptures by artists such as Pieter d'Hont, Eric Claus, Jan Bronner, Charlotte van Pallandt, Eddy Roos and Piet Esser, there is a close collaboration with, among others, Museum Beelden aan Zee, a varying range of sculptures that together form a provide a good overview of the development of 20th century Dutch figurative sculpture. The sculpture park is free to enter and open daily from 12:00 to 17:00, unless there are closed meetings.
