Hermann Löns achieved great renown during his lifetime and became a defining figure of his time. The heathland, which he glorified in literature like no other, became the central motif of his work. As a hunter, nature and regional poet, as well as a dedicated naturalist and conservationist, he developed into the mythically elevated figure of the "heath poet." Furthermore, he championed the protection of landscapes and nature from an early stage and is thus considered a pioneer of modern environmental and nature conservation thinking.

The memorial stone was erected in 1966 and commemorates the heath poet Hermann Löns, who was a German journalist and writer. Even during his lifetime, Löns, whose ideal landscape was the heath, became a myth and known as a "heath poet" as a hunter, nature and local poet, as well as a naturalist and conservationist. Hermann Löns was born on August 29, 1866 in Culm (West Prussia, now Chełmno in Poland), and died on September 26, 1914 near Loivre near Reims (France). Today, tourism in the Lüneburg Heath is also based on the myth of Hermann Löns. After his death, Löns was not forgotten: his nature and animal stories were read, his songs were sung, poems were learned by heart; hunters, nature lovers and hikers revered him.
