Nature reserve Het Zwanenwater' is located on the North Sea coast near Callantsoog. The two largest natural dune lakes in Western Europe are embedded in this nature reserve. 'Het Zwanenwater is a protected nature reserve in excellent condition. This natural oasis in the dunes offers rare animals and plants ideal living conditions.

The Amstelmeer is separated from the Wadden Sea by the Amsteldiepdeich, over which the federal road N99 passes. Before the Afsluitdijk (dam) was built, the original lake, Amsteldiep, was the transition between the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee. The Amstelmeer was actually a former inlet of the Wadden Sea. There are various small towns around the Amstelmeer; on the northeast side Westerland and De Haukus and on the southwest side Van Ewijcksluis. The Amstelmeer is now a hot spot for beach lovers, swimmers, surfers, sailors, anglers and bird watchers.
