Interesting history of the locks

Imposing church.

The Koninginnesluis is located in the Merwede Canal between the Wilhelmina Bridge and the Emma Bridge (hence the name). The construction of the lock was completed in 1886. The intention of the construction was to relieve the pressure on the Oude Sluis that was nearby.

Before the Sint-Nicolaas Church was put into use in 1875, church services had been held in the barn church on the Overeind (now: the Malapertweg) since 1688. This barn church stood approximately where the Structuurbaan and the Malapertweg now cross. This church had now become too small. That is why a piece of building land was purchased in 1870, located where Schoolstraat now runs, with the intention of building a new church there.
