Why a stop here is worthwhile: The "stump" tower: Even from afar, you can see the striking tower without a spire. Due to a lack of funds in the 15th century, it remained at a height of 57 meters. This gives the church its unique, almost defiant silhouette. The view: During the season, you can climb the 317 steps of the tower. The origin of the name Brielle (or 'Den Briel') goes back to the Celtic word 'brogilo,' meaning "enclosed area" or "hunting ground." In the 11th and 12th centuries, Voorne (a municipality to which Brielle belongs) consisted of small and large islands where farming families settled and built dikes to prevent flooding.
