As early as the 12th century, Gouda played an important role in shipping. In the Middle Ages, the city was centrally located on the route for ships sailing to Amsterdam and Flanders. After the 15th century, Gouda's importance for international shipping declined. Today, historic clippers, barges, tjalks, tugboats, and steepleboats moor majestically side by side in the museum harbor.

The Museumhaven Gouda, is a museum for historical transport ships in the city center of Gouda. Many of the ships present date from around 1900 and were suitable for sailing on the Zuiderzee, the Waddenzee and along the coast.
