The new lighthouse is functional, but unfortunately it has no charm - the old lighthouse is something special

The West Tower has always been an attraction; when I was there with school in 1981, climbing it was the absolute highlight – back then the youth hostel was still in the Dünenhalle; also very beautiful and idyllic

This path on Wangerooge is actually called "Road to the East" and runs directly along the beautiful beach.

The "Old Lighthouse" was built out of necessity after the catastrophic New Year's flood of 1854/55. The original lighthouse in the west was so badly damaged by the flood that it served as an important navigational landmark along the East Frisian North Sea coast until 1969. However, due to its outdated technology and its low height of only 39 meters, the "Old Lighthouse" soon became obsolete. Thanks to a dedicated islander, the building was saved from demolition. Today, a local history museum has been established there. Known for its breathtaking views, it also serves as a registry office.
