Smashing veggie breakfast!

The Pocklington Canal was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century to transport agricultural goods from the East Riding to the larger urban centres to the south and west. A Bill was placed before Parliament in 1814 and the canal was designed by George Leather Jnr, an experienced navigation engineer who worked on Goole Docks and the Knottingley and Goole Canal. The canal was opened in 1818, running for 9.5 miles from the River Derwent at East Cottingwith to a mile south of Pocklington. The cost was £32,695, which was actually less than the original estimate. Hagg Bridge is one of four bridges crossing the canal designed by George Leather.

Off-road parking, could easily fit 10-12 or so cars in here.

From here, you get a nice view of Hagg Bridge, a humpbacked crossing that spans the Pocklington Canal. The bridge looks so picturesque surrounded by the scenery of the Wolds. The fields are vibrant green, dotted with seasonal wildflowers and trees.

Great pastries but the service is disinterested at best and rude at worst. We waited several minutes at the counter for the person serving to acknowledge us but the group of six cyclists who arrived after us were not so lucky - they gave up and left after ten minutes waiting patiently. Additionally, there’s no lock on the toilet door and precious little space for bikes. Unless you really like pastries and don’t care about service then I’d look elsewhere. The Wenlock Arms in the village is a good choice and bike friendly.

Elvington is a cute village centred round the village green, with the Grey Horse Inn a focal point. A 17th century stone bridge crosses the River Derwent at the east end of the village, connecting it with Sutton Upon Derwent. North West from the village is Elvington Airfield, WW2 bomber station and home of the Yorkshire Air Museum.

The field to the north east of the road is the site of the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25/09/1066, a turning point in English history. It was here that King Harold of England defeated the Viking King Harald Harada and Harold's own brother Tostig. This resulted in the end of the Viking era in England, such was the loss of life. Though from here, King Harold and his men had to march to Hastings on the south coast of England to meet William of Normandy who was challenging Harold's ascension to the throne. Harold's exhausted and much depleted men were defeated at the Battle of Hastings and Harold killed. This lead to the Norman Conquest of England. The Battle of Stamford Bridge is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. There are monuments to the Battle of Stamford Bridge in the village and on the site of battle at the end of Whiterose Drive.

Open for coffee , panines , cakes when the pubs are not

Skipwith Common is a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and covers an area of 500 acres. The reserve is lowland heath and alongside wildlife is also connected to history with a World War 2 aircraft station situated there and home to ancient burial sites.

Wressle Castle is a medieval ruin built as a palace-fortress in the 1390s. Once owned by Thomas Percy it is now privately owned, but open to the public on occasion. The castle was once much bigger with four sections that formed a square around a courtyard, now only one remains.

You can park your bikes close to you on the entrance side of the pub.

A narrow hump-backed bridge over the Pocklington Canal near Melbourne. It is currently closed to motor vehicles but remains open to cyclists and walkers. There is access to the canal towpath.
