6月 14, 2024, The Iron Bridge (Ironbridge Gorge)
"In order to be able to transport his goods, the ironworks owner Abraham Darby III was looking for an architect who could build him a stable bridge made of "stone, brick or wood" across the five-kilometer-wide valley of the Severn in central England. Thomas Pritchard accepted the challenge, but he built a bridge made of cast iron, the completion of which in 1781 marked the beginning of the new "Iron Age". It was the largest free-floating bridge construction of the time. Built at the highest point of the valley, the Iron Bridge became a symbol of the industrial power of the Darbys and a monument to the Industrial Revolution." With these words, the website for the television series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" presents its film contribution (in German) about the UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site "Iron Bridge": https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/ironbridge-grossbrittanien-folge-156/3sat/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS83MTUyMDA4

3月 24, 2023, The Iron Bridge (Ironbridge Gorge)
Labelled, rightly or wrongly, as the "Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution" Ironbridge and its ‘Iron bridge’ is a stunning little county town with a cute high Street, lovely shops, pubs and cafes, a sprinkling of good museums and of course the bridge itself. The latter being the first fabricated from cast iron. It’s a grand beautiful architectural statement from bygone days and well worth a visit!

12月 31, 2022, The Iron Bridge (Ironbridge Gorge)
The iron bridge that spans the River Severn near to the Shropshire village of Coalbrookdale was the first of its kind anywhere in the world when it was constructed in 1779. This pioneering use of cast iron was afterwards adopted widely in the construction of bridges, aqueducts and other structures. The bridge's fame became so great that it gave its name to the spectacular wooded gorge which surrounds it, now the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. In 2017-18 English Heritage undertook a £3.6m conservation project on the Iron Bridge to protect the future of this historic example of British ironwork.

Cast iron bridge that crosses the river Severn in the small town of Ironbridge. As the first of its kind it inspired the widespread use of iron as a bridge construction material.

Nice wide B road with a bit of undulation. Can get up some good speed in both directions.

10月 19, 2022, View of Moreton Corbet Castle
Grade I listed Elizabethan ruin. A great place to explore the nooks and crannies, or just look at the impressive building from the roadside.

10月 11, 2022, Steep Descent to Bridges
Good road surface and a straight road, but it is really steep heading down into Bridges. Make sure to use plenty of brakes and take it easy.

10月 10, 2022, Winding Woodland Climb in Shropshire Hills
Shaded climb through the woods with a good surface. It's tough going, but at least you've (usually) got the road to yourself.

10月 10, 2022, Undulating Road Through Shropshire Hills
Beautiful up and down road through the Shropshire Hills, with great views to match the undulation. The surface is good so you can really go for it if you've got the legs.

10月 10, 2022, The Burway Climb, Shropshire Hills
Number 39 of Simon Warren's original top 100 climbs, The Burway is a must do in the Shropshire Hills. Nearly 2 miles long and avg 9%, you better have a good breakfast before taking this one on! But don' let the stats get you down, it's a stunning road with amazing panoramic views.

10月 10, 2022, Asterton Bank Climb
Popular Shropshire Hills climb. Tough gradients and an old surface (still paved, but a bit uneven) but the views are worth the effort. Careful of the descents as with all downhills in the region.

The 20/22% doesn’t kick in until after the straight. Decent road surface so stand up and dance on them pedals :)

8月 8, 2022, Powis Castle and Gardens
Powis Castle is a medieval fortress built in the 13th century by the Welsh ruler of Powys Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn. The castle has been lived in, ransacked and modernised over the years since it's construction. It's now managed by the National Trust. The castle is open from 10:00 - 16:00 everyday, members get in free but non-NT members will have to pay. There is a café on site that's open from 10:00 and a small NT shop.

Really excellent little cafe. I checked that the sausages in the sausage bap were proper sausages - they certainly were. Got ribbed somewhat for my fancy London ways!
